Ballenberg rewards the person who gets distracted. A workshop door is open, somebody is demonstrating a craft, and suddenly the next farmhouse can wait. Historic buildings brought from different parts of Switzerland sit across a large outdoor site, so this is a day of wandering as well as looking inside.
Check the daily programme before choosing your way through. Demonstrations change, and trying to cover every house can turn a lovely visit into a march. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a layer for the paths between buildings. Check the seasonal opening dates; it is not a year-round indoor museum.
