Spiez’s bay and its railway station are on different levels. That small detail is worth knowing before falling for a lake-view photograph, especially with a suitcase or tired children. Choosing a base here comes down to two questions: where will you go most mornings, and what would you like waiting when you come back?
Lake Thun for a mixed week
Spiez would be a sensible first shortlist for a week split between the lake and different valleys. Its rail connections give you several directions to play with. Choose Thun if you would enjoy an old-town walk, dinner out and shops close at hand on the days you stay put. Both work for a holiday that includes more than mountain excursions.
Faulensee and Einigen are smaller choices. A quiet waterfront evening may be the attraction, but check the exact walk to the bus, food shopping and restaurants. A place described as “near Spiez” is not necessarily beside its station. With children, luggage or limited mobility, that last stretch matters.
The accommodation listed on this site is around Lake Thun. It is not in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. A lake stay means travelling into the Jungfrau valleys on the days you visit them.
Interlaken for frequent changes of plan
Interlaken is a practical choice for a short stay with several directions in mind. Check whether your trains use Ost or West before booking an address. Being between the lakes does not put every hotel on a lakeshore, and central streets can be busy.
Stay in the valley you will use most
If most mornings begin above Grindelwald, staying there saves repeated valley journeys. Lauterbrunnen makes a stronger case when its valley and the villages above it are the main reason for coming. Neither needs to be sold as universally better: you gain proximity and give up some convenience for days elsewhere.
Compare actual accommodation prices for your dates, including transport and parking. Do not assume the lake always costs less. For a car-free visit, check the door-to-platform journey and the return after dinner. Choose the address that suits most of your stay, not just its busiest day.
